Abstract
This prospective observational study was done to analyze clinicomicrobiological profile and outcome in pediatric periorbital cellulitis (<18y) in a tertiary care hospital over a period of 2 years from Jan 2018- Jan 2020. 55 children with periorbital cellulitis; 48 (87.3%) preseptal cellulitis, 5 (9.1%) orbital cellulitis, 1 (1.8%) subperiosteal abscess (SPA) and 1(1.8%) orbital abscess (OA) were studied. Most common age group was 1-5 years with trauma (21.8%) being the most common risk factor. Most common organism isolated was found to be Staphylococcus aureus followed by gram negative bacilli and Streptococcus pyogenes over all positive cultures (conjunctival, nasal, wound swab & blood culture). Medical treatment alone was successful in 87.3% patients with IV cloxacillin for 7-10 days being the preferred treatment as an in-patient. One case of SPA and one case of OA underwent successful drainage. Visual outcome was good in all cases with no intracranial complications noted.
