Abstract
Aim–To report microbiological profile and antibiotic sensitivity pattern of Endogenous Endophthalmitis (EE) cases from Eastern India
Method – Retrospective case series. Vitreous biopsy from 56 cases of EE was taken. Culture and antibiotic susceptibility was performed
Results – 14/56 cases were culture positive, 9 Gram Positive Bacteria (GPB), 4 Gram Negative Bacteria (GNB) and one fungus. Most common organism was Staph epidermidis (6) followed by Pseudomonas (2) and Staph aureus (2). For Gram Positive Bacteria (GPB), susceptibility was 100% for Vancomycin, 77.8%-100% for Fluoroquinolones (FQ). In Gram Negative Bacteria (GNB) susceptibility was 100% for FQ, Amikacin, Tobramycin; 75% for Ceftazidime. Both GPB and GNB showed resistance to Cephazolin
Conclusion – To the best of our knowledge this is first case series on EE from Eastern India. Staph epidermidis is the leading cause of EE in Eastern India. Both GPB and GNB showed good to marked susceptibility to commonly used antibiotics.
