Abstract
Design: Observational case control study
Methods:-
Patient population: 20 impression cytology diagnosed OSSN cases undergoing surgical
excision were included. 20 control samples were taken from patients undergoing routine surgery (cataract/squint).The tissue samples obtained were sent for histopathological examination and for estimation of
NF-kB and p53 expression by RT- PCR. The clinical and histopathological characteristics were compared with the relative expression of NF-kB in tissue samples.
Results: The mean NF-kB expression was lower in cases than controls (-0.14± 0.17 versus 5.11± 2.26).There was
up to 36.2 fold downregulation among cases. The mean p53 expression was up-regulated 27.9 fold in cases than the controls.
Conclusion: The down-regulation of NF-kB in ocular surface squamous neoplasia may serve as a
biomarker for histopathological grading and thus, lending utility in management and its
prognostication.
