Abstract
PURPOSE: To assess the epidemiology, clinical profile and outcome of ocular injuries in patients with polytrauma. Methods: A retrospective, observational study of 312 cases presented to the Trauma center of IMS,BHU between Mar’18-Feb’19.
Result: Among 2026 patients of polytrauma, records of 280 (7.2%) patients were reviewed. The mean age of the pt was 32 yrs(4–76) with M to F ratio being 2.9 :1(p<0.004).RTA the most common etiology(48.57%)followed by fall from height(27.8%),Physical assault(16.4%)and Sport/recreational 7.1%.Majority of victims had ≥3 body organs(63.57%).Most common was cranio-facial trauma(48.57%).27.86% bilateral ocular trauma, orbital trauma(57.1%),periorbital swelling and lacerations(49.29%),Closed globe injury(48.57%),27.8% rupture globe.Visual impairment in 63.5%.Blinding outcome in 16.4%.Loss of eye in 27.8%. Conclusion: Polytrauma has high risk of vision-threatening ocular injuries.Early multidisciplinary approach is essential for early detection and treatment.
