Abstract
Aim:To determine visual outcomes of pediatric traumatic cataract. Methods:Retrospective analysis of 29 patients who underwent cataract surgery(grouped into cataract after penetrating injury &blunt injury).Age at injury, age at surgery, mechanism of injury, wound type, duration between corneal tear repair &cataract surgery, refractive rehabilitation, complications &visual acuity were noted.Results:72.4% cataract-penetrating injury ;27.5%-blunt trauma.Mean visual acuity-1.268 ± 0.51 log MAR at presentation &0.53 ± 0.37 log MAR-post operatively. In the penetrating injury group,24% had ≥6/12 ,66% between 6/15 -6/60 &10% < 6/60.In the blunt injury group,87.5% - ≥6/12,12.5% between 6/15-6/60 &none < 6/60.59% patients-amblyopia therapy following surgery. Conclusion:Traumatic cataract in children can have good visual outcome which is independent of the age at presentation.Patients with blunt injury have better visual outcome, but,a penetrating injury managed meticulously can have good visual outcome
