Abstract
Aim: To analyse changing trends in clinical profile and treatment modalities of Sympathetic Ophthalmia over a decade in a tertiary eye care center in South India
Method: Retrospectively 47 patients satisfying the inclusion criteria were divided into 2 subgroups. In Group A, 18 patients from 2010-15 received only oral steroids without early immunosuppressant/parenteral steroids. But in the Group B from 2016-20, 29 patients received them with mandatory adjunct imaging [FFA/ OCT/Fundus photo]
Results: Group 2 had better visual recovery than group 1(p value=0.023).The complication rate [cataract, secondary angle closure, serous retinal detachment, CNVM was higher in group 1 (p value =0.013).The mean recurrence rate in group 2 reduced to 1.08 from 2.62 in the group 1. Interestingly, the finding of peripapillary atrophy was less in group 2
Conclusion: Early parenteral steroids with early immunosuppressant results in better visual outcome, reduced recurrence rate and reduced complications.
