METHOD:With the combined effort by a private tertiary eye care organisation and Government of Odisha,a ROP care model was initiated in a Govt newborn care unit,Odisha. Two inhouse Ophthalmolgists were trained in ROP screening, laser, intravitreal injections over 2.5 years. The nursing staffs and pediatricians were trained on quality newborn & ROP care by periodic workshops and CMEs.
RESULT:1528 babies screened,601 were detected with ROP,75(laser-67,anti-VEGF-8)babies required treatment. Most of the procedures were done bedside while some were referred to the mentoring eye care unit for treatment. At the end of 2.5 year, the newborn care unit was independent in ROP screening and treatment by inhouse Ophthalmolgists.
CONCLUSION:The model presented here is sustainable and can go a long way in establishing ROP care in various Govt new born care units in the peripheral districts.
