Abstract
Aim: Poor vision is a common complaint in children with cerebral palsy(CP). Aim of the study is to describe the spectrum of vision impairment and associated ocular abnormalities in children with CP and its correlation with motor disability
Method: Retrospective record review of 40 children with CP treated over 2yrs
Results: Mean age was 3.15yrs with male: female ratio of 23:17. Ocular abnormalities: Cerebral visual impairment (CVI) 27/40(67.5%), refractive error 18/40(45%), strabismus 17/40(42.5%) and nystagmus 7/40(17.5%). Vision was good 3/40(7.5%), moderate 22/40(55%) and poor 15/40(37.5%). The commonest category of CP was Spastic 32/40, dyskinetic and mixed 4/22 each. CVI was more common in the spastic quadriplegic group 13/40(32.5%). Children with profound CVI had poorer functional neuromotor grading.
Conclusion: Children with CP have a high prevalence of CVI. Visual dysfunction being associated with poorer motor function may have a role in postural control in children with CP.
