Abstract
Aim: Cerebral visual impairment (CVI) is an important cause of poor vision in children with developmental delay. The aim is to evaluate cause, functional vision in children with CVI and its correlation with MRI.
Method: Retrospective study of 40 children with CVI treated over 2yrs
Results: Study included 26 male:14 female with mean age of 2.7yrs. Causes included hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy 17/40(42.5%), infections 10/40(25%), structural anomalies 7/40(17.5%), hypoglycemia 4/40(10%) and hydrocephalus 2/40(5%). Visual function-good 6/40(15%), moderate 20/40(50%),poor 14/40(35%). Improvement in visual function seen in 32/40(80%) with integrated therapy, moderate CVI group fared the best. Periventricular leukomalacia(PVL) on MRI seen in 6 children had profound CVI, of these 3 showed improved quality of vision with therapy.
Conclusion: Most children with CVI have moderate visual function and same fared best with vision therapy. PVL on MRI is a predictor of profound vision loss
