Abstract
Aim:To evaluate incidence and analyze causes, nature of ocular trauma and treatment during COVID-19 lockdown
Methods:Ocular trauma from March 23-May31(2020) treated with appropriate personnel & patient protective measures, was analyzed for demographic characteristics, comparing data from lockdown phases 1,2,3,4.
Results:Total of 1073 patients(30.7% females, 69.3%males) were evaluated.Frequency of patients was 305(28.4%),232(21.6%),191(17.8%) and 345(32.2%) in phases 1,2,3&4 respectively. Injuries seen were blunt trauma(9.8%), chemical injury(3.3%), foreign body(51.3%),conjunctival tears &SCH(4.4%),insect bite(0.9%), corneal tears(4.2%), lid injuries(1.7%), traumatic iridocyclitis(14%),TON(1.8%), miscellaneous(8.6).
Conclusion:A fairly high number of injuries were seen in early and late phases of lockdown.Occurrence of trauma in lockdown from safety of homes, raises concerns regarding need to educate public regarding safe practices while handling sharps and metallic instruments.
