Abstract
AIMS To introduce conventional infrared auto-refractometers to assess meibomian gland morphology in patients with and without Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS)
METHODS AND MATERIAL 82 patients with no apparent Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) were screened for KCS using Schirmer’s II test and divided into KCS and non-KCS. Everted eyelids were examined by non-contact meibography using infrared camera of a conventional Auto-refractometer.
RESULTS Out of 43 patients with KCS, 24 had significant MGD and out of 39 patients with no KCS, 21 had MGD. Analysis showed no significant difference in occurrence of MGD between both groups. But, out of 49 total symptomatic patients (irrespective of heir Schirmer’s II test score) 38 patients had MGD.
CONCLUSION A simple Auto-refractometer is a handy tool to assess Meibomian gland status in an out-patient setting. According to this study, it can be seen that patients having symptoms more than the signs of dry eyes are found to have significant MGD.
