Abstract
PURPOSE-To study the correlation between near-work duration (hours/day) and degree of myopia(mean spherical error) among young people(10-24 years).
METHOD-The study included 184 myopic patients of 10-24 years of age. two groups were made on the basis of duration of near-work in hours/day after excluding school/college near-work hours: Group 1 included 96 patients with near-work duration ≤ 5 hours/day and group 2 included 88 patients with near-work duration >5 hours/day. After age,sex ,outdoor activity and parental myopia matching ,mean spherical error of both eyes was compared with duration of near-work.
RESULT-Mean spherical error was found to be -0.69 D and -1.83 D for group 1 and group 2 respectively. Mean spherical error in GROUP 2 patients differed significantly from GROUP 1 (p=0.01).
CONCLUSION-Patients involved in near-work activities for more duration have higher degree of myopia. Thus duration of near-work shows positive correlation with degree of myopia in young people.
