Abstract
Purpose: To find out the newer indications of posterior optic buttonholing (POBH) of IOL in pediatric cataract surgery.
Material & methods: Retrospective analysis was done of 1470 medical record. Routine protocol was LMA+PPC+AV+IOL and reason to do additional POBH was noted.
Results: Total (n=139, 9.45%) children underwent for POBH, which includes traumatic cataract (29), secondary IOL (35), membranectomy with IOL (21), absorbed cataract (11), uveitic cataract (8), anterior capsulorhexis extension (26), large rhexis (6), and anterior megalophthalmos (3). The mean age of children was 7.4 ± 5.1 years. No significant complications were observed in any of the patients except anterior segment inflammation in 18, corneal oedema in 8 and rise in IOP in 3. One case of IOL drop, 1 need IOL exchange and 3 developed PCO at 6 months follow up with mild tilt in 2 cases.
Conclusion- This study adds on the current literature as a different/new indication of POBH in paediatric cataract surgery.
