Abstract
Purpose: To systematically assess the patients of traumatic optic neuropathy.
Methods: Patients presenting with traumatic optic neuropathy were questioned for duration of trauma to hospital reach, the lane of travel, helmet status, timing of perception of visual deterioration, site of impact, treatment received and other injuries.
Results: A total of 12 patients were included. Patients reached an eye hospital between 4 hours to 6 months after trauma. 8 patients travelled on correct lane and only 2 wore helmet, most common site of impact was on ipsilateral brow/forehead. With retained consciousness visual blurring was noted immediately. Three patients received IV steroids and 10 patients had associated facial and cranial injuries.
Conclusions: Blindness due to traumatic optic neuropathy can be mitigated by better awareness and more stringent rules.
