Abstract
METHOD: Visual Function Tests were done in 158 eyes of 79 patients (age range 18–50 years) on 15-19 mg/kg/day Ethambutol for average 3 months period. Visual Acuity Test (Snellens Chart), Visual Field Test (Goldmann Perimetry), Colour Vision Test (Ishihara Chart), Contrast Sensitivity Test (Pelli Robson Chart), Fundus Examination (Indirect Ophthalmoscope) & Pattern Visual Evoked Potential (Electroencephalogram) were done at start & 2 months into therapy.
RESULTS: VEP showed P100 latency delay during therapy in 134 eyes (85% cases). On further follow up in 98 eyes, latency returned to baseline in 53 eyes (54%), 6 months after Ethambutol stoppage.
Visual Acuity, Visual Field, Colour Vision showed changes in both eyes of 1 patient (<2%). Fundus showed changes in 24 eyes (15% cases). Contrast Sensitivity changed in 4 eyes (5%). CONCLUSION: Out of Visual Function Tests used, Pattern VEP is highly suitable for early detection and prognostic follow-up in Ethambutol induced ocular toxicity.
