Abstract
Purpose:To observe the compliance of nasolacrimal duct (NLD) massage and symptomatic improvement of Congenital NasoLacrimal Duct Obstruction (CNLDO).
Method:The study comprised 96 lacrimal ducts in 70 infants (age ≤12 months) diagnosed with CNLDO which were divided into 2 groups by considering compliance of NLD massage: Group 1 & Group 2 with good and poor parental compliance respectively. Patients were followed up twice at 3 monthly intervals.
Result:At 1stfollow up of group1 patients,45 ducts in 31 patients improved and 21 ducts in 16 patients did not improve out of which 20 ducts improved & 1 duct underwent probing at 2ndfollow up.At 1st follow up of group2 patients 11 ducts in 8 patients improved and 19 ducts in 15 patients did not improve out of which 14 ducts improved & 5 ducts underwent probing at 2ndfollow up.Group1 showed significantly higher rate of resolution (p=0.037).
Conclusion: CNLDO patients with good compliance of NLD massage had higher rate of spontaneous resolution.
