Abstract
Aim: To evaluate outcomes of congenital cataract operated in first year of life.
Methods: We retrospectively analysed 117 eyes who underwent phacoaspiration with primary posterior capsulotomy, anterior vitrectomy with/without intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in first year of their life.
Results: Bilateral cataract was seen in 50 patients; unilateral in 17 patients. Mean axial length was 18.78 mm. IOL was implanted in 90 eyes. At 2 years follow up, central, steady and maintained fixation was achieved in 86 eyes. Glaucoma was seen in 6 eyes. Membranectomy and pupilloplasty was required in 25 and 11 eyes respectively for visual axis obscuration (VAO); out of which 8 eyes were aphakic. None of our patients developed endophthalmitis, retinal detachment or phthisis bulbi.
Conclusion: Cataract surgery with IOL implantation achieves favorable visual outcomes in congenital cataract. We recommend early surgery with IOL implantation, if possible, and long term monitoring in these cases.
