Abstract
Purpose:To assess the choroidal thickness in thalassemia patients and its relationship with pre-transfusion haemoglobin concentration
Methods:Observational cross-sectional study of 60 patients with transfusion dependent beta-thalassemia major receiving chelation for 2 yrs, between 6 and 18 yrs and 60 age and sex matched healthy control subjects. All cases underwent a complete eye examination and OCT.
Results:Significant difference found in visual acuity between the case and control groups [p<0.001] & significant difference was found in choroidal thickness between cases and control group at fovea and six other points with thinning of choroid in case group[p value<0.05 at all points].Mean pre transfusion hemoglobin was significantly associated with decreased choroidal thickness at fovea[p<0.01] Conclusion:beta TM pts have ocular changes in the form of decreased visual acuity and thinning of the choroid & choroidal thinness was positively correlated with mean pre transfusion Hb.
