Abstract
AIM: To compare surgical success(cosmetic, anatomical &functional) of ‘W’ shaped incision versus tear-trough incision in External Dacryocystorhinostomy(eDCR). METHODS: In a prospective study(Nov18-March20), 61 eyes of chronic dacryocystitis underwent eDCR randomized into group-T(30eyes) &group W( 31 eyes). Functional and cosmetic assessment was done at 3months using Munk’s and Devoto’s score. RESULTS:Mean age was 40.1±14.9years with female preponderance. Intraoperative surgical exposure & tissue delineation was better in groupW. Intraoperative skin flap tears & reversible blackening of their apices were specific to GroupW. In early postoperative period, lid edema & epiphora(p<0.05)were more in groupT. Surgical time, functional & anatomical success,& subjective & objective cosmetic success were comparable in 2groups(p>0.05).
CONCLUSION: Surgical success of W shaped incision was comparable to conventional Tear trough incision with a better surgical exposure & delineation of tissues.
