Abstract
Ocular shotgun injuries represent small subset of ocular trauma and occur with low frequency. The purpose of this study was to characterize ocular injuries due to pellets and determine prognosis of such injuries in view of modern micro- surgical techniques. Of 1066 patients who reported with ocular trauma, 664 eyes of 643 patients were included in the study. Primary features or variables studied were visual acuity, type of injury, zone of injury, grade of injury and anatomical status of eye in accordance with BETT and Ocular Trauma Classification System. Ocular Trauma Score was calculated for each eye. Our results suggest powdered shotgun cause mostly open globe injury especially perforating type. VR surgery with chorio- retinectomy and silicone oil tamponade in perforating injuries is recommended to decrease rate of PVR. Not suggested before to our knowledge, site of entry wound in this type of injury has prognostic significance.
