Abstract
Subretinal abcess is a rare but devastating presentation of endogenous endophthalmitis which requires intensive local and systemic therapy for proper management. There is no accepted protocol for managing subretinal abcess and is largely dependent on case presentation and doctor’s preference. We present a case of Citrobacter associated endogenous endophthalmitis with subretinal abcess which was successfully treated with 41gauge needle assisted intralesional injection of Piperacillin and Tazobactam combination. Our case report is the second one in literature which highlights that 41G needle can be used safely to inject antibiotic into the subretinal space through a small self-sealing retinotomy with minimum risk of retinal detachment and encouraging results. Also, it is the first one reporting Citrobacter associated subretinal abcess and its successful treatment with intralesional injection of Piperacillin and Tazobactam combination.
