Abstract

AIM:To analyse the visual outcomes and complications of 100 consecutive patients undergoing sutureless pars plana 23-G vitrectomy for various indications,operated by a single surgeon at a tertiary care eye centre in Tamilnadu. METHODS:Prospective study,conducted over one year,in which 100 consecutive patients, who presented with various indications for vitrectomy,underwent 23-G PPV. Their visual status was classified as mild,moderate and severe visual impairment pre and post-operatively.The various tamponades used for each procedure and the post-op complications were noted.

RESULTS: From a pre-op visual impairment of 2% and 11% in the mild and moderate groups,we noted a marked improvement to 33% and 34% post-op respectively,and a significant drop in severe visual impairment from 87% pre-op to 33% postoperatively. CONCLUSION: 23-G vitrectomy is a safe and effective alternative to 20G vitrectomy.The indication for surgery plays a crucial role in defining the final visual outcome.
