Abstract

The advent of local anaesthesia was an important advancement in ophthalmic surgery. Ophthalmic procedures such as preoperative peribulbar, retrobulbar, subtenons injections are routinely performed to induce anesthesia and akinesia of the globe. These procedures are commonly performed by ophthalmologist themselves. The incidence and prevention of needlestick injury by these injections have generated a considerable debate since their introduction. Perforations of globe are known rare but serious complications of these local anaesthetic injections. The incidence has been reported from 0.006% to as high as 0.47% in various studies. It may or may not be recognized at the time of injection henceforth early detection and proper treatment are a key to management. The final visual outcome depends on the site of injury, presence or absence of associated complications and instillation of appropriate management. This video shows management of globe perforation following ocular anesthesia.
