Abstract
Acute chemical injury is a true ocular emergency, one where the first line of treatment could determine the final outcome. Since the first response can be an ophthalmologist of any speciality, it is critical for every ophthalmologist to be able to grade, prognosticate and offer medical care for an acute chemical burn and decide, if and when a case needs surgical care. This course attempts to show every step from dealing with the assessment to primary medical care to surgical interventions in the acute phase of an injury and how our response and treatment can shape the course of recovery for the patient. It also briefly delves in thermal injury and how the management might differ when dealing with a cracker injury. It goes over the ‘need to know’ of the various lines of assessment and management for each grade of injury, the prognostication and the need and timing of specialized globe saving surgeries.
