Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Pterygium induces corneal flattening and astigmatism, in turn affecting corneal topography.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: 75 eyes (n=75) of 75 consecutive patients with primary pterygium underwent Pterygium Excision with Conjunctival Autograft over one year by a single surgeon. Steep and Flat corneal power was measured pre-operatively and post-operatively 1 week and 1 month using corneal topography.

RESULTS: Post op change in Flat corneal power was statistically significant (Pre op = 40.62, Post op 1 week and 1 month was 43.80 and 44.56 respectively) while change in steep corneal power was not significant post-operatively (Pre op was 45.80, Post op 1 week and 1 month was 45.67 and 45.47 respectively)

CONCLUSION: Pterygium excision leads to steepening of the cornea in horizontal meridian, higher K-values and lower IOL power, implying that pterygium surgery must precede cataract surgery to avoid refractive surprise.
