Abstract
Aim:To compare safety and efficacy of oral propranolol Vs oral prednisolone as primary modality of treatment in lid capillary hemangioma.DESIGN: 20infants were prospectively randomised into 2groups of 10each-group A initiated with oral propranolol, group B with oral prednisolone. Lesion size ,ptosis regression, visual acuity by Teller’s acuity cards and side-effects (ocular and systemic) were assessed.RESULTS: Within each group at 1 year there was a significant reduction in size of lesion and ptosis (group A: 87.56 +/- 7.72%,P=0.0021; group B: 84.29 +/- 9.54%,P=0.0017).No significant ocular or systemic side-effects noted in Group A. In group B, 4 patients had systemic side effects.Group A had no rebound increase of lesion after stopping the treatment, which was noted in 1 patient in group B after stopping the treatment prematurely.CONCLUSION: Efficacy of oral propranolol is comparable to oral prednisolone with lesser systemic and ocular side effects for lid capillary hemangioma.
