Abstract
Purpose:To assess clinical&molecular changes in the contralateral (CL) eye of keratoconus (KC) patients
Methods:65 patients(130 eyes)with topographically documented progressive KC in both eyes, tears collected using Schirmer’s strip. One eye underwent CXL&6 months post CXL,topography&tear collection were done.30 tear soluble factors including cytokines, chemokines, cell adhesion molecules&extracellular matrix (ECM) remodellers were measured using flow cytometric bead based multiplex ELISA.
Results:At 6 months maximum keratometry (Kmax) significantly reduced(p<0.05)in CXL eyes, it showed insignificant reduction or increase in CL eye & reduction of Tear inflammatory factors. Conclusion:Following CXL in one eye, trends towards reduction in topographic progression along with reduction in key tear inflammatory factors suggest plausibility of a beneficial sympathetic effect in CL eye.Further studies are needed to establish this&to explore factors associated with variability in this effect.
