Abstract
Aim-To evaluate the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on cornea related problems &role of teleconsultation.
Methods–Analysis of patients presenting to hospital during Covid-19 pandemic &lockdown with emphasis on diagnosis, disease severity, challenges faced in treatment & strategies like telemedicine for health care.
ResultsIn 2 months prior to lockdown, 200 cornea surgeries were done of which only 6% came for scheduled follow up compared to 90 % conventionally. Increase in complications like corneal ulcer with endophthalmitis & perforations. Shield ulcer, graft failure and postoperative raised IOP seen. Reason for poor follow up was lack of transport, no hospital pass &fear of getting COVID. EBAI mandated temporary halt of eye banking resulted in less availability of corneal tissues for transplantation.
Conclusion– Key learning from this unprecedented pandemic& lockdown-Better access to strategies like teleconsultation can prevent certain complications and improve access to health care
