Abstract
objective – To determine prevalence of papilledema versus pseudopapilledema among children referred for suspected papilledema to identify clinical factors differentiating the two diagnosis.
Method – This is a prospective cross sectional analysis of patients < 18 yr old referred for suspected papilledema by ophthalmoscopic examination between Dec 2018 and Jan 2020. Result – A total of 28 patients were identified of this 18 patients were diagnosed with pseudopapilledema. Four patients with papilledema and 6 with unrelated etiology. Headache was a present symptom in 19 patients, 7 patients complained of additional symptoms suggestive of increased intracranial pressure of whom four patients diagnosed with papilledema. The incidence of true papilledema among children referred for suspected papilledema based on fundus examination is low. Headache is a common nonspecific symptom in most patients. A detailed history and examination will distinguish pseudopapilledema from other anomalies.
