Abstract
A retrospective chart review of 64 patients with disc edema (DE) presenting to the Ophthalmology department of our institute from January to December 2019 was done. Pseudopailledema were excluded from the study. 28 (43.7%) patients were male and 37(57.8%) patients had bilateral DE. The leading cause of DE was idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) in less than 40 years of age and retinal vascular occlusions in more than 40 years of age group. DE due to ischaemic ON presented earliest whereas ICSOL presented late. Diminution of vision was the most common presenting complaint across all types of DE. Mean retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness at presentation was maximum with DE due to IIH and minimum with DE due to optic neuritis. Most of the etiologies showed higher RNFL thickness in the superior and inferior quadrants as compared to nasal and temporal quadrants. This report gives an overview of the different etiologies and characteristics of DE over one year in our institute.
