Abstract
Needle stick injury is a common occupational hazard. Aim: To assess the incidence, outcomes of NSI in a tertiary eye care hospital and provide recommendation. A retrospective data base review of NSI for 36 months (2017-2019)was done.Results: Total 173 NSI were reported. Of 2,49,870 ophthalmic procedures performed, 124 NSI was from OT & the incidence for 2017,2018 &2019 were 0.03, 0.05 & 0.05 respectively. Location wise-theater, OPD& ward are 76.8%, 13.8%& 9.2 % respectively. Staff wise-doctors, nursing staff & other worker 37%,50.2% &12.7% respectively. Procedure wise OT-Sideport blade& needles are 37.6% & 55.6%, rest was during biomedical waste handling(6.7%). Side port blade NSI among junior surgeons(84%) & senior surgeons(16%).Patient analysis: 2 positive for HBsAg. None had seroconversion. Awareness of NSI & protocol are reason for better reporting(increasing trend of incidence). Hense, training junior surgeons for handling sharps, PEP, proper sharps disposal at site are essential.
