Abstract

METHODS:150 patients with age related cataract who underwent uncomplicated phacoemulsification cataract surgery were examined. Dry eye was evaluated pre-operatively and post operatively using Ocular surface disease index scores, Tear meniscus height, Tear film break up time and Schirmer’s test.Follow up was done on day1, at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months post operatively. RESULTS:There was a significant difference in tear meniscus height, tear film break up time and Schirmer’s test on follow up at 1 week, at 1 month & at 3 months postoperatively, when compared with preoperative values.. Thus indicating that phacoemulsification cataract surgery induces dry eye.Incidence of dry eye after phacoemulsification cataract surgery in our study was 12%.Deterioration of all dry eye parameters peaked at 1 week postoperatively and showed gradual improvement towards end of 3 months postoperatively. Conclusion: Assessment of dry eye before phacoemulsification ensures promising results postoperatively.
