Abstract

SUMMARY:

A case of gold particle remaining as an intra ocular foreign body in the posterior segment for more than 10 years was reported .22 karat gold particle did not cause any inflammation in the eye.

CASE REPORT:

45 year old male,gold smith presented to us with history of accidental injury to his right eye from explosion of over heated golden ball while using a blow pipe for which he took medical treatment as advised by ophthalmologist.

DISCUSSION:

As pure gold is too soft ,it could have been alloyed with copper.If copper is present in the form of dilute alloy it tends to deposit in various membranes of eye producing a picture of chalcosis . But in this case gold particle (with probable small amount of copper) remained within the globe for 10 years without causing any inflammation.
