Abstract
METHODS: 30 patients diagnosed with serous retinal detachment (unilateral/bilateral) were evaluated in retrospective case control fashion. All patients underwent complete ophthalmological and systemic examination to assess underlying risk factors.
RESULTS: Out of the 30 patients, 6 patients (20%) had myopia, 5 patients (17%) had VKH syndrome and 4 patients (13%) had Coat’s disease. Ocular TB and CSCR (2 patients each, 6%) were other ocular conditions associated. Rare causes include FEVR and choroidal melanoma (1 patient each, 3%). Common systemic risk factors were hypertension (5 patients, 17%), vasculitis and diabetes (post PRP)(2 patients each, 6%).
CONCLUSION: Most patients with diagnosed serous retinal detachment have underlying ocular or systemic risk factors. Resolution occurs with observation or appropriate treatment of these factors, rarely requiring surgery.
