Abstract

PURPOSE: To analyze the correlation between optic disc (OD) changes, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and visual field defects (VFDs) in normal tension glaucoma (NTG) patients

METHODS: Evaluation of 46 NTG patients attending glaucoma clinic at tertiary care centre was done. OD was assessed by SD-OCT and 90D slit lamp biomicroscopy, RNFL defects were evaluated with red free fundus photographs and VFDs by automated perimetry.

RESULTS: OD was most commonly found to be of large size (80.43%), the neuroretinal rim (NRR) showed inferotemporal notching (73.91%) and RNFL defects were found to be localized (65.21%). The most common VFDs were superior paracentral (43.47%, MD -3.67±0.72dB, PSD 3.87±0.68) followed by inferior paracentral (26%, MD -3.4± 0.77 dB, PSD 3.29±0.76).

CONCLUSION: NRR loss in NTG eyes correlated well with RNFL defects that were found to be localized and with VFDs that were more frequent in paracentral areas.
